Welcome, lovely listeners and Precious Patrons of Pulp Pamphlet Parlay, to Issue 38 of Comics Squee. Each podcast our panelists, dominoed daredevils, discuss the comic books, graphic novels, and general sequential art geekery that excites them.

Our superpowers are tangents and tentacles.

Taking the revolving 4th chair this issue is our guest, comics artist and creator Colleen Coover. She draws Bandette, a fun tale of a masked thief and her devil-may-care adventures in Paris which she co-created with Paul Tobin. We squeed about it on show 13 with guest Paul Cornell. In addition to being an indie comics creator, Colleen has also drawn for Marvel on titles like X-Men: First Class and Thor and the Warriors Four

n this issue of Comics Squee we have: the mightiest hero alive, who is partially squirrel and partially girl ; an all ages adventure in the Cloudsphere ; Susie homemaker as ruthless assassin ; and a for adults only “interactive novel” game about romance.

  1. John: Lady Killer by Joelle Jones (writer, artist), Jamie S. Rich (writer), and Laura Allred (colorist) (starts at 00:02:54.250)

Podcast-Track-Image-Lady-KillerThis is a great, finely wrought series created and written by Joelle Jones, with assist from Jamie S. Rich. The art is great, expressive, with well executed action. And Laura Allred’s colors are great and have a pallet in keeping in theme with the ’50s setting.

The main character is a house wife/mob assassin. Her mother-in-law suspects she’s having an affair, and her boss has decided she’s past her usefullness.

And the clothes! Double-stitching, period fashion, and so on. Joelle Jones knows clothing and she draws it fantastically.

  2. Colleen Coover: Coming Out on Top game from Obscurasoft (starts at 00:08:01.667)

    Podcast-Track-Image-Coming-Out-On-TopThis is an adults-only squee.

Coming Out on Top is an interactive novel game and gay dating sim experience. Colleen loves these sort of animated interactive romance novels. She says to Tweet her with any recommendations. Her handle is @ColleenCoover

  3. April: Maddy Kettle: The Adventure of The Thimblewitch by Erich Orchard (starts at 00:17:52.333)

Podcast-Track-Image-Maddie-KettleThis is a fun, sweet, and well crafted tale of a girl on an adventure in a steampunkey fantasy world. It’s lovely, charming, and expertly colored. There’s a floating space toad on a string, a bear/racoon duo with a hot air balloon, and no one is what they seem.

  4. Chriss: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist) (starts at 00:25:59.167)

Podcast-Track-Image-Unbeatable-Squirrel-GirlThis comic is HILARIOUS. Chriss laughs out loud every time she reads it. This is an excellent book to give to new readers and long time comics fans alike.

Listen to the podcast to hear Chriss sing the Squirrel Girl theme song.
