Welcome, lovely listeners and Precious Patrons of Pulp Pamphlet Parlay, to Issue 52 of Comics Squee. Each podcast our panelists, riding rainbow-farting unicorns, discuss the comic books, graphic novels, and general sequential art geekery that excites them.

Our superpowers are tangents and tentacles.

Guest is owner of Muse Comics and Games, Amanda Salmons

In this issue of Comics Squee we have: coloring fun ; a Miyazake classic ; SPOON ; and SCIENCE!

  1. Dave: Howl’s Moving Castle movie (starts at 00:01:49.500)

Dave when to see an anniversary screening of Howl’s Moving Castle, an Miyazake film based on a novel. We all had different memories of how the ending went, but we enjoy the silent characters.

Dave highly recommends it. He and April took it with them on vacation to and it was lovely to be able to hang out and watch it.

  2. Chriss: Comic Book Coloring Books (starts at 00:08:25.319)

There are a lot of coloring books out there that are comic book themed. From Walking Dead to Mouse Guard to Batman: Hush and Women of Marvel.

What Chriss really loves about comic book themed coloring books, though, is that you can get an appreciation for the colorists’ craft by coloring comic book pages and characters yourself. We talk a lot about the color in the books we squee about – an essential part of the story telling.

  3. April: The new Tick live action series on Amazon (starts at 00:15:21.833)

If you’re a long time listener to The Squee you know what a big Tick fan April is. So she was exceited to see that Amazon Prime is doing a new live action version as an original series online.

Only episode one is up so far (as of our recording in January of 2017). It was written by Ben Edlund, creator of The Tick, and is a darker take on the Tick with the idea that Arthur is psychotic and on medication and so there’s doubt about whether the kooky Tick and the rest are real or a product of his illness. Which is an interesting direction to go since he was always the calm and ‘normal’ charcter in the serious (for an ex-accountant who dresses as a moth and is the sidekick of a nigh invulenarble dude, that is).

    • 3a) Tangent 1: When we’re old we’ll use robots to keep the kids off our lawn (starts at 00:22:04.167)
  4. Amanda Salmons: Science comics (starts at 00:22:56.667)

When Amanda talks about comics she likes to talk about science comics. Because most people aren’t aware that there a lot of comics about science and that it’s a really great format to talk about science stories.

Books from GT Labs and by Jim Ottaviani are some of Amanda’s favorites of these. The one on Feynman from First Second is one of her favorites.

    And Logicomix is excellent.

Question Time: How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck was The Hulk (starts at 00:31:27.333)

_Podcast-Track-QUESTION-TIME

Yes, we sepculate about wood chuck Hulk. Seriously, how could you get this far with no expectation of silliness.
