_Podcast-Track-QUESTION-TIMEWelcome, lovely listeners and Precious Patrons of Pulp Pamphlet Parlay, to 2017 and issue 51 of Comics Squee. Usually each podcast I’m joined by my merry panel of squeesters and a guest to discuss the comic books, graphic novels, and general sequential art geekery that excites us. But due to a combination of home buying, laziness, and the sneaky way 2016 raced passed us …. I fell down on scheduling.

So here for your delights is a ‘Best of Comics Squee – 2016’ edition, looking back on our most notorious segment – Question Time.

First up, we Hulked out with regular guest and friend of The Squee, Dan Whitworth…

Show 49 with guest Dan Whitworth

Question Time: What’s your favorite version of the Hulk? (starts at 00:01:11.000)

  • April:

Enjoyed the first hulk movie for it’s cinematography, but Lou Ferrigno is best Hulk.

  • Chriss:

The force of nature, “Why puny humans hate hulk” version.

  • Dan:

Like Chriss, the simple, childlike Hulk always wondering. Also a fan of the Hulk/Hawkeye broship from the Avengers: Mightiest Heros cartoon (which was canceled for a cartoon more like the movies).

  • John:

Also prefers the more primal, Dr. Jekeyl/Mr. Hyde version of The Hulk. His fav version of Banner, though, is Mark Ruffalo’s from the Avengers movies.

Show 48 with guest Sarah Jordan (starts at 00:08:34.167)

Question Time: What’s your favorite comic combat scene?

  • Sarah Jordan:

When the church just explodes in Preacher. Kaboom. And done.

No one had anything for an answer, so we refined the question to, “What are your favorite comics that have good combat?”

  • Chriss:

    Amala’s Blade, Delilah Dirk.

  • John:

Sixth Gun, Gail Simone’s run on Red Sonja. The hallway scene in the Netflix Daredevil series.

  • April:

The fight scene in Mouse Guard when they’re fighting the crabs.

Show 47 with guest Jesse Butler (starts at 00:13:34.500)

Question Time: What did you read last?

Our ‘easy question’ turned out to be surprisingly hard to answer for the Squeesters.

  • John:

Some Eigth Seal. Last issue of Bitch Planet.

  • Chris:

    All New Wolverine #4

  • Jesse:

    Black Cannary and Starfire

  • April:

Pinnochio: Vampire Slayer or whatever she squeed about last.

  • QTa) Tangent 1: Spider Gwen
  • QTb) Tangent 2: Chris loves Teen Titans Go
  • QTc) Tangent 3: The Love Boat
  • QTd) Tangent 4: Things don’t hold up decades later

Show 46 with Katherine Buffington (starts at 00:21:23.833)

Question Time: What’s your favorite comics to TV conversion?

  • John:

Early on, Smallville. Daredeville. Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. Superfriends

  • April:

The Tick, of course. Going the other way, she’s heard good things about continuation of Buffy. The Batman animated series in the ’90s.

  • Katherine Buffington:

    Really loves Rurouni Kenshin.

  • Chriss:

Ultimate Spiderman. Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heros.

Show 45 with Chris Tschetter (starts at 00:25:03.667)

Question Time: What’s your favorite comic with dinosaurs?

  • The Tick with Dinosaur Neil
  • Devil Dinosaur
  • Various Japanese action TV shows from back in the day
  • Dinotopia audiobook from ZBS Productions

Show 44 with Jen Wang (starts at 00:28:16.667)

Not all strictly comics but we’re not picky.

Question Time: Who are your favorite female comic characters?

This one was harder to answer, because there are so many.

Show 50 with guest Alex de Campi (starts at 00:32:06.000)

For podcast 50 Chriss switched things around and had the squeesters ask HER questions. A thing she warned them about once in a past podcast and then never mentioned again because she’s a butthead.

Question 1: From John, “What is your favorite adaptation from another medium into comics”

  • Chriss:

My Little Pony TV show into comics are really cool. Usually it’s the other way around, comics into other media; like The Adventures of Luther Arkwright into a Big Finish audio play.

    • 1a) Tangent 1: Lettering fails kids comics
  • Alex de Campi:

Always claims Ichi the Killer is the best Batman / Joker movie ever made and Christoper Nolan can fight her on it, she doesn’t care. But that’s a manga adaptation. She would like to check out Darwin Cooke’s adaptaion of the Parker Series sometime, though.

  • Dave:

There have been a few HP Lovecraft book adaptations into comics that he’s liked better. Particularly the story of Dagon from Ben Templesmith that Dave backed on Kickstarter.

  • April:

Graphic novel version of City of GLass novel by Dave Mazzucchelli.

  • John:

Mike Mignola’s graphic novel interpretation of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser prose series by Fritz Leiber.

Question 2: From April, “What are the things your don’t like and why?”

We always talk about just the things we like on The Squee. But here are somethings we don’t like.

  • Chriss:
    • I have a problem parsing black and white comics because so many don’t do a good job differentiating objects and action with suitable shading and inking. For me it’s often a mush of random lines.
  • Alex de Campi:

When artists are asked, or choose, to use celebrities in comics. For why she points you to Mark Miller’s Wanted and the pile of nope that is the main character looking like Eminem (per Mark’s specification).

    • 2a) Tangent 2: Separating artists’ despicable views from their work
  • Dave:

When alt history goes off the rails. Particularly like with Manhatten Project where they use all these historical people’s names and likenesses as ‘masks’ for their own characters who are totally different people. It’s like a reverse fan fiction – they’ve written their own story and then backed it up into a fandom or history. It feels flat at best.

  • John:

When an issue of a comic doesn’t tell a complete story

It’s at this point that Chriss drops an uncharacteristic (and beeped) F-bomb about the time DC hid most of a Batwoman meets Wonder Woman story in a sudden mid run #0 for that “Preludes” BS they pulled on all their titles and there was five pages of story, with the rest of the $5 issue being ads and a preview for a Superman story!!

Ah,so many Question Times. Here’s to a happy new year and a 2017 filled with bounteous squeeing and tangents a plenty.
